Dancing black women, I get. But where are they teleporting in from? And why is that watermelon giving us the evil eye? In the bizarre poolside/underwater music video for “I’m Not Your Toy,” La Roux’s Eleanor Jackson demonstrates that her fiery coif, in addition to being bulletproof, is also waterproof.
Really wish that La Roux would drop it with the toy-instrument/8-bit sound. Jackson has such an aching, honest voice but the track’s cheesy synths spoil it. “It’s all false love and affection / You don’t like me, you just like the attention,” Jackson rails at her lover — while the oversweet bass assures us that everything’s just chipper. Who are we supposed to believe?
The Data remix does it right: Give the girl some synths with balls, some strings and a touch of reverb. Now her angst is coming through. A diva is born.
La Roux is in town on Jan. 31 at the Paradise Rock Club. Who has tickets?
